5 out of 5 stars Dandy machine at a great price   July 22, 2010
James C. Blasius (Naperville, IL United States)
I purchased this to replace my dad's aging homebuilt PC. I had such a good experience I will do the same for my sister in law's machine with one.

Pros: comes with XP home, which is a good enough version of XP. Not much crapware on it. The 1.6GHz atom is quite sufficient for web surfing and office work; the 1GB ram is enough, as is the 160GB disk. The machine is really quiet and produces little heat. It comes with a VESA mount so you can hook it onto the back of your flat screen.

Cons: disk layout is odd; a 40GB C drive and a 100GB D drive, plus a restore partition - the problem is that your average PC user won't know what to do with a D drive, it would have been better laid out with a big C drive. No built in CDROM, you can buy a USB CDRom for $12, but it doesn't seem to want to boot from the CD, so you can't replace the OS easily. 4 USB ports is also rather limiting.

I really like this machine, and being a cheap PC aficionado, it gave me a warm feeling to buy something cheaper than I could build it.

4 out of 5 stars Great small factor pc, runs ubuntu out of the box   July 22, 2010

I was able to install ubuntu 10.04 lucid using the live cd iso and unetbootin. to create a bootable sdcard. Everything works fine with the default install, including wireless, ethernet , sound and video. 1 GB RAM is more than enough for running ubuntu.

The keyboard and mouse included are lowest quality. not comparable to HP or Dell keyboards. The mouse is sold as laptop travel size in the market.

One annoying feature(!) I have realized in asus mainboards is that they do not cut the power to usb port when you turn the pc off, the support response is that this is a feature to charge your i**d etc without the need of a wall charger..

The pc is very quiet and the fan is inaudible even though running boinc to crunch grid computing projects..

I would give it a 5 star if it came with a better keyboard and mouse.

5 out of 5 stars This is a great little computer   July 9, 2010

We now have two of these little machines in the office. First bought one to use as the "bookkeeping server". It turned out so well that we replaced an aging computer with a second EeeBox.
What we like is:
1. Windows XP (albeit Home version).
2. Almost no "hijacking free soft ware".
3. Quiet, just about no sound at all.
4. Low power consumption, no heat (these computers are running 24/7).
5. Baby foot print; we have them mounted on the back of their monitors.
We have both a wired and a wireless network in the office and are using both. The "bookkeeping server" is also the server for the SqueezeBox that plays our music.
We upgraded the RAM to 2 GB. Looking at the EeeBox it looks like Mission Impossible to open it. Type "eeebox memory upgrade" into Google and you will find that it is not.

5 out of 5 stars Great low cost PC   July 4, 2010

I bought this device as I am development some Excel templates. I am a big MAC user and found that the templates I generated in Office 2008 for the MAC looked different than on a PC using Excel 2007. But when the templates are developed on Excel 2007 for the PC they look fine on a MAC with 2008. So I had to break down and buy a PC, but I did not want to spend a lot of money. I also have a big monitor (HDMI 1920 x 1200) with great resolution that I did not what to degrade the view when using my PC. So this product turned out to be perfect for my needs.

It does not run at "breakneck" speeds but it does have a digital DVI monitor output. I bought it for $[...] delivered on Amazon with a $[...] rebate. Hard to beat getting a PC with Windows XP for only $[...]!!

It has it own OS that is not Windows XP that you have to work around in the beginning to get it to boot Windows XP. Their OS is focused on using the PC to watch Internet TV, that is the reason for the DVI port.

I could not be happier!!

4 out of 5 stars I like it   June 3, 2010

I use this more as a home theater component then a desktop pc. If used as a computer, it would be a very basic one. It comes loaded with Windows XP, IE and Adobe Reader.

I had problems with connecting devises to my home theater using a Linksys router so I thought I would give this a try. I have it placed behind my LCD and it is quiet enough to run 24/7 (I will find out next electric bill if the low energy usage claims are accurate). I love all the convenience this unit provides but please note that it requires a wireless keyboard and mouse for the pc options to be used when connected to a home theater.

I can now listen to downloaded music through my home theater system (Onkyo) instead of my pc speakers. Love the difference! I also love being able to watch downloaded videos on my LCD (with HDMI cables). The best part? This EeeBox doesn't care about the source of the videos like other devices (Apple TV for one).

The Eeebox does stick sometimes which is annoying. Only 4 USB ports are provided and they go fast. Although port hubs are inexpensive and an easy fix, I don't like adding yet another device. Hopefully this will be addressed in later versions. I am thinking of trading this in for a Cisco-Valet Plus Wireless Hotspot which doesn't provide the same options but will allow me use the wireless devices I already own at a lower cost.
